Heart of the Old West Activities and Attractions

Happy Jack Road, WY Hwy 210 Scenic Byway, heads west from Cheyenne and you will almost always see antelope along this drive. Sherman Summit is the highest point on the Lincoln Highway and is almost the highest point on the Transcontinental Railroad. Vedauwoo Recreation area, in the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest,  features delightful rock formations and trails for walking and hiking. Frequently you will see rock climbers pitting their skills against these granite monoliths. The Box Canyon walk is short and scenic.

Laramie, Wyoming Is an attractive university town, home to the University of Wyoming  and the Wyoming Territorial Prison. Bad guys once imprisoned there included infamous bank robber, Butch Cassidy.  Ivinson Mansion Victorian House Museum has tours. If you are into dinosaurs, the Paleontology Museum at University of Wyoming is excellent with artifacts from the Como Bluff digs west of town.

Medicine Bow, Wyoming and the Medicine Bow Hotel is where Owen Wister spent a lot of time at the bar doing research and writing a portion of The Virginian.

Elk Mountain, Wyoming, is a typical western ranching community located on the banks of the Medicine Bow River. A short walk through town will find friendly people in an idyllic setting.

Dinner at the Elk Mountain Hotel offers grand views of either the meadow or the Medicine Bow River. This elegant small dining room is an ideal setting for a scrumptious meal prepared by Cordon Bleu Paris-trained chef Susan Havers.

Don’t  leave Elk Mountain without soaking up some history of the Overland Trail.
