The Plaza Hotel, dubbed "The Belle of the Southwest" in 1882, presides regally over the Old Town Plaza in Las Vegas, New Mexico, which was an important trading hub on the Santa Fe Trail. Seemingly suspended in time, historic Las Vegas is home to more than 900 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places and is about the same size it was when Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders held their first reunion at the Plaza Hotel in 1899. The Plaza Hotel was a favorite silent film location for director/actor Romaine Fielding and famous cowboy actor Tom Mix between 1913 and 1915. Fielding leased the entire place renaming it Hotel Romaine and that faded name is still visible on the brick facade. The hotel has just completed the addition of an adjoining building, adding 35 lodging accommodation units and 3100 square feet of meeting / banquet space, plus renovations in the restaurant and public area.
